The LRN Presents the Most Over Used Phrase of 2018 ... "I Appreciate You"

...and its only March!

When the Fuck Did "Thank You" Get Replaced By "I Appreciate You"?

"I appreciate it" implies gratitude, much as a "thank you" does. By changing "it" to "you", the meaning becomes quite different. One is an acknowledgment of an act. The other bestows a grand, valued and cherished treasure ... or an admired, enshrined and revered soul-mate ... or an acclaimed, applauded and relished beacon & so on...

To tell someone that they are appreciated is quite an extraordinary and monumental thing that's not to be tossed about lightly.

For instance, a fella told me that he "appreciated me" each time I gave him a beer (I'm a bartender). If that beer(s) saved his life ... well, I would certainly take the appreciation to heart ... but in this situation, I would prefer a simple "thanks" or "cheers". It's more than adequate. In fact, it's better than adequate, it's gratitude (accompanied by a big fat tip, thank you very much)!

There is value and merit to appreciation but most of all, it's wonderful to appreciate and to be appreciated. Let's not devalue and muddle it up with a casual over-usage. Sometimes gratitude is quite enough.

Cheers & I appreciate your time and you and thank you.

P.S. Knuckle punch the idiot that said "Safety First" right in the taint and stop having so many god damned kids!
