Carl Reiner 1922-2022 ... Fair Thee Well Jerk

Whilst viruses spread, locusts devour, and the village idiot denies, the world has endured another devastating blow ... Comedy legend Carl Reiner is observing the ultimate 6-foot social distance. R.I.C.M. (Rest in Comedic Mayhem) 1922-2020.

Many things can be and have been said of this pioneering man, and I'd like to add to that.

In 1961, Carl developed and produced the Dick Van Dyke Show. He recruited a spunky young actor named Mary Tyler Moore. Before signing on, Mary insisted that her character (Laura Petrie) could wear pants on the show. As this was unheard of at the time, Carl hesitated but negotiated with the network. Arguing that Laura was a former dancer. Dancers wear slacks ... but only at home.

I can just hear Carl doing some convincing, "Of course she wears pants. Women wear pants. My wife wears pants. Your wife wears pants. Let's show some pants!"

That was the first time that a woman was seen wearing pants on television. By the end of the show's run, the character of Laura Petrie was always in slacks.

It's the little things.

Often times Carl portrayed a jerk, jackass or bewildered putz but he was far from that.

Thanks for all you did and how you changed the world for the better. You were one of the greats and you will be missed.
